Music with Mark
Rock and I are both compulsive, prolific song writers. Both of us have piles of unpublished songs just laying around. In the Fall we traded collections. I found a very rough demo of Rainbows on one of his discs and fell in love with it immediately. I had so many ideas come to me that I had to get it done fast. The drums, the bass lines, the lead parts, production ideas, the whole thing just formed instantly. While the original had a real Canadian indi-rock feel to it, I took it in a euro-pop direction. I channeled Friendly Fires, Mansun, and a bit of U2, to end up with what we have today.
Chatter With Rock
this song was written by accident when I was tuning my guitar, I strummed the Bm chord in the rhythm of "Horse with no name" and off to the races I went! It was actually the night before I had my first feature interview on Big Dog 100.9 and I knew I wanted to show this song... so I recorded it that night and it was played on the radio the next day... pretty freaking wild!
Lyrically... An unavoidable and very sad revelation that you and the person you are most in love with want two very different lifestyles, and to compromise on some middle ground would only lead to neither person being able to realize their dreams. Letting someone go because you love them so much that their happiness is worth more than your own is one of the toughest things to do. Especially when they taught you so much about being a good person, the power of positivity, thoughtfulness and every other quality a human being could have. A different time a different place who knows, but right now they can't go with you. I could never sing this song live before, I always choked on the words. It's been a reoccurring theme in my life, don't date me I'm married to music!! :)
I was pretty excited Mark picked this tune out of the pile! When I got the copy back from Mark with his new version, I played it and then sat there looking at the screen in disbelief.... sorta like when you see a puppy with an ugly sweater. I was like WTF, it's a dance song?... then I listened again and was like "This IS a
dance song!" Thanks to Mark I can sing this song live now and it makes me smile
