about

Music With Mark
I was writing with another dude just before hooking up with Rock. Neil, the guy i do Ink Realm with was heading to Toronto so i started searching for another vocalist early. I ended up doing a few tunes with this dude, and he was really into more classic sounds. He described a sound to me that he was looking for and i took a stab at it. I can’t remember the exact description he gave me, but Awakening is the end result. It’s as good of a Tom Morello impression that i can do, and i still added in some pretty parts. It’s funny, i studied that guy for years, he’s one of my biggest inspirations, and at the end of the day, i just don’t play the way he does. I am reminded of Stand Up Comedy by U2. The Edge had been part of It Might Get Loud, with Jimmy Page and Jack White. Then, this Stand Up Comedy tune appears on U2’s next record. It’s novel to hear The Edge try to play like Zep, but at the end of the day he should just stick to the punk rock. Neat fact, the solo quotes the main motif from Perfect Dark, the classic shooting game on the Nintendo 64.

Chatter With Rock
Ah yes Awakening! If I remember correctly I actually had a couple sets of lyrics to this one! Love the big drums in this a lot!!! This is the third tune we did and the one that made me think we should do this for real!

Lyrically it's about complacency. When the glittery shine of what was once brand new is gone and you reevaluate where you are in life and what is important to you, sometimes you find that you've changed. Now it's time to make the decisions, stay where you are and do what you've always done because you've invested so much or do you walk towards what keeps life exciting for you? We've all been there whether it be a relationship, a career choice, a hobby... we're in a constant state of evolution and we can choose to embrace it or ignore it.

lyrics

So you crash out
Enough to keep me waiting
It's time to hash this out
Drained anticipating

Has the fire gone out
The fire's gone out today
And I don't want to live that way
The fire's gone out
The fire's gone out
The flame is dead

We could continue walking faded lines
Eyes away from all straying at times
We might decide we don't like what it is we see
Adversely carve a new awakening

A tired animal
Done living the rat race
It's all the same
It's stealing sane

Oh so liberal
All this talking is two faced
It's all in vain
It's all to blame

Has the fire gone out
The fire's gone out today
And I don't want to live that way
The fire's gone out
The fire's gone out
The flame is dead

We could continue walking faded lines
Eyes away from all straying at times
We might decide we don't like what it is we see
Adversely carve a new awakening

Solo

Spell it out
What you want
Did you sell it out in compromise
Freedom in this captive state
Calls for revolution

We could continue walking faded lines
Eyes away from road straying at times
We might decide we don't like what it is we see
Adversely carve a new awakening
We can walk these faded lines
But it's time to decide
